ADDITION AND SuBTrACTION OF MONEY
We can add or subtract the money as we add or subtract
ordinary numbers. Let us understand this with examples.
Example 1. Sumit buys 1 kg of sugar for `45 and 1 L of milk
for `57. How much will he pay to the shopkeeper?
Solution. Cost of 1 kg sugar = `45 General store
Cost of 1 L milk = + `57
Total cost = `102
Thus, Sumit will pay `102 to the shopkeeper.
Example 2. Rahul buys a pack of tea for `140 and gives a `200 note to the
shopkeeper. How much money will the shopkeeper return to him?
Solution. Amount given to the shopkeeper = `200
Cost of a pack of tea = – `140
Money returned = `60
Thus, the shopkeeper will return `60 to Rahul.
Example 3. Ram bought a toy for `210 and a pair of shoes for `579. How much did
he spend in total?
Solution. Cost of the toy = `210
Cost of the shoes = + `579
Total cost = `789 ` 210
` 579
Thus, Ram spent `789 in total.
Example 4. A mobile phone costs `7650. Sanya has only `6475 in her purse. How
much more money does she need to buy the mobile phone?
Solution. Cost of the mobile phone = `7650
Money in the purse = – `6475
Money needed = `1175 ` 7650
Thus, Sanya needs `1175 more to buy the mobile phone.
